There’s no doubt that hockey is one of Canada’s most favoured games, and now McDonald’s is participating in the rivalries spread across the country with their Showdown Menu. Featuring a commercial spot with All-Star players Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid, the Showdown Menu is the ultimate post-game celebration meal. Read on to learn about the McDonald’s Showdown Menu, plus our ranking of the menu items.
What is the McDonald’s Showdown menu?
The McDonald’s Showdown menu is a limited-time offering of a food lineup “inspired by Canada’s favourite game and its biggest stars,” according to a press release. The menu roster includes a chicken burger, a poutine, a cheeseburger and a sundae for dessert.
It also includes two burgers inspired by some of Canada’s most popular players. Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid inspired the Big Mac-David and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews inspired the Smoky Quarter Papi.
So who comes out on top? Here is our official ranking of the Showdown menu from worst to best.
5. The Big Mac-David
The Big Mac-David is a twist on the classic Big Mac. It is a burger with four beef patties, McDonald’s special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions.
We hope we don’t make Edmonton Oilers fans angry with this ranking, but the Big Mac-David was just too much burger for us. While we will never say no to McDonald’s special sauce, four patties was a little too much for us to wrap our head (and mouth) around.

4. The Hat Trick
The Hat Trick is a triple cheeseburger with cheese, three beef patties, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard on a freshly toasted bun. You can never go wrong with a cheeseburger so we did really enjoy this. However because it is not anything different or special compared to the rest of the menu, the Hat Trick falls short of our top three picks.

3. The Celly Sundae
The Celly Sundae is a vanilla soft serve covered with either hot fudge or caramel sauce and topped with colourful popping candy. This twist on a McDonald’s classic was a definite win! A McDonald’s hot fudge sundae has a special place in our hearts and the addition of the popping candy was so unique and fun. Every bite was creamy and chocolatey and the popping candy was a sweet and exciting touch. This is definitely a celebration-worthy dessert.

2. The Smoky Quarter Papi
The Smoky Quarter Papi (inspired by Auston Matthews’ nickname: Papi) is a quarter-pound beef patty burger topped with BBQ sauce, hickory-smoked bacon, crispy onions, pickles and cheese. Like a typical Maple Leafs season, this burger just misses out on a top spot.
We love the sweetness of the BBQ sauce paired with the smokiness of the bacon and beef patty in this burger. Plus, the crispy onions added a nice texture and crunch, adding to an amazing bite. We also thought the ratio of sauce to toppings was perfect! But it just can’t compare to our number-one pick… just like the Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sorry Leafs fans!
1. The Spicy Junior Chirpy
The Spicy Junior Chirpy is a crispy piece of chicken, topped with shredded lettuce, spicy buffalo sauce and mayo. This is the first McDonalds Canada chicken sandwich to be topped with spicy buffalo sauce and we are obsessed with it.
The crispy chicken goes so well with the spicy sauciness of the buffalo sauce. The buffalo sauce definitely has a spicy kick, however, it’s not painfully spicy. The Spicy Junior Chirpy takes our top spot on the Showdown menu because it is the perfect size and the flavours are unlike anything we’ve ever tasted from McDonald’s.
