Carla Hall’s first restaurant Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen opened in Brooklyn in 2016 and closed the following year. The restaurant’s specialty was Nashville-style Hot Chicken, and according to the website they offered “slow-cooked, fast-served food that hugs you” and “old-fashioned southern goodness.” The restaurant was funded by Kickstarter, and Carla ultimately felt that was the reason for its downfall: “We had all these people basically asking us, ‘What’s up? Are you stealing our money?'” she recalled to Mashed. Although the restaurant didn’t find success, Carla has spoken openly about the many valuable lessons she learned in the experience.

Carla Hall stands tall at 5’11” which allowed her to work as a model in Europe in her twenties, walking runways in Paris, Milan and London. “It was actually when I was modeling in Paris that I found food, which is so crazy,” Hall told Yahoo Life. “Every Sunday we would have this Sunday supper hosted by a woman who was from Memphis, Tennessee, but living in Paris. We would get together and we’d make dishes we were missing from home: buffalo wings, mac and cheese, collard greens, and the conversation would invariably go to ‘How does your mom make macaroni and cheese?’”

Carla Hall got her degree in Accounting from Howard University, and later attended L’Academie de Cuisine in Maryland where she completed her culinary training.
